This is a nightmare.
After experiencing general weakness and shooting pains in her foot and leg, one Florida woman was rushed to the hospital where she would spend a week recovering from an infection. Now she's blaming the pedicure she received at a salon in Tampa, Florida for her condition.
Tara Batista was diagnosed with a bacterial infection in her left big toe, an area where doctors noticed a deep abscess, according to WFTS ABC Action News Tampa Bay. She began noticing alarming symptoms-including her foot turning black, she says-just a few hours after receiving a pedicure at Nail Image in Tampa.
"An infection that comes on in less than 24 hours-to that severity, something's not right," Tara told WFTS. There is no clear evidence that her pedicure caused the ailment, though Tara claims she remembers asking the nail technician to ease up and be more gentle during her appointment. "It was painful," Tara said. The owner of the nail salon declined to comment since there is "no conclusive proof" the pedicure led to Tara's condition, according to the news outlet.
Doctors performed surgery on her foot, which was followed by a week-long stay in the hospital. Now Tara is receiving care from an in-home nurse while she's hooked up to an IV line, which will have to remain in place over the next six weeks-a timeframe that includes her wedding day. "This is not what I envisioned for my wedding," Tara said. "It's been a total nightmare."
You can protect yourself during your next manicure or pedicure by following these guidelines:
- Always ask to see your technician's license.
- Evaluate the tools and stations around the salon, and ask to watch staff members clean the foot tub and supplies before beginning your appointment.
- If you're wary of using the salon's tools, purchase and bring your own set to the salon.
- Go to Safe Salon Rating to see where your favorite parlor ranks in terms of health and safety protocol.
